Enjoy Manual Chiropractic Manipulation

Alternative adjustments are ways of achieving the effects of manual chiropractic manipulation using adjusting tools instead of the practitioner’s hands. James Eckert, DC, of Eckert Chiropractic, P.C. in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, is an experienced chiropractor who excels in using both the manual Activator adjusting instrument and the electric ArthroStim® tool. Alternative Adjustments Q&A

Alternative adjustments are chiropractic techniques that use the Activator Method® to deliver gentle force to a vertebra or joint.

The traditional chiropractic technique is the high-velocity, low-amplitude (HVLA) thrust, which involves the practitioner using their hands to make adjustments to your spine and joints.

Alternative adjustments use a small tool, the Activator adjusting instrument, to deliver a more gentle level of force that doesn’t cause any cracking sounds.

Dr. Eckert uses two different adjusting tools: the manual Activator and the electric ArthroStim.

There are two key advantages to using alternative adjustments.

The Activator adjusting instrument is spring loaded, enabling Dr. Eckert to apply a fast, low-force impulse to specific treatment areas.

Because the delivery of the impulse is so quick, it’s too fast for your body to tense. Your muscles can tense in anticipation of a manual adjustment, which causes treatment resistance.

Since your body has no chance to tense, there’s no muscle resistance. The result is a more effective treatment.

In addition, alternative adjustments have the benefit of being so localized that they don’t apply force beyond the treatment area, which is better for the surrounding tissues.

Dr. Eckert uses alternative adjustments to treat a variety of musculoskeletal disorders, including:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Chronic headaches
  • Migraines

When you receive alternative adjustments, you lie on your front with your head placed in a specially shaped recess so you don’t have to twist your neck.

The ArthroStim adjusting instrument allows Dr. Eckert to deliver an effective treatment while significantly reducing the degree of force used.

That means it’s suitable for use on patients who may not tolerate traditional HVLA thrusts. ArthroStim is especially useful for infants, young children, and the elderly, as well as people who have:

  • Acute or extreme pain
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Neck pain
  • Pain in their extremities
  • A tendency to tense up
