Let’s face it… computers are here to stay.

Back in B.C. times (that is, Before Computers) the incidence of carpal tunnel syndrome was few and far between. Sure, there were typewriters back then, but the amount of time most people spent on a typewriter at home or in the office didn’t come close to that which we spend today using the computer for business, personal and recreational purposes. Also, with almost all students having access to a computer, either in school or at home, the age of people suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome is becoming younger and younger. What is happening here? Most of the time the reason for developing carpal tunnel syndrome is due to a compression on the median nerve. This particular nerve enters the hand through an opening (the carpal tunnel) which is made of ligamentous material.

One of the first symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness in the index, middle and fourth fingers. Pain, tingling and burning symptoms can also occur and, in many cases, the symptoms are worse during hours of sleep. Because other conditions could cause carpal tunnel-like symptoms, it is very important to get an accurate and complete diagnosis. Past medical treatments included braces, cortisone shots and, surgery. Unfortunately, surgery is often the first treatment suggested, and, like the other medical treatments of the past, results can vary dramatically. In clinical trials, new technologies, such as the low-level laser, have proven very effective in helping to relieve the symptoms and consequent suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome.

Chiropractors are constantly involved in the latest technological advances in non-invasive and drug-free treatment for many different health conditions. In the case of a patient that presents with carpal tunnel syndrome, (many come after having had the surgery), a chiropractor will evaluate the condition, render a proper diagnosis and look to non-surgical correction such as manipulation of the bones in the wrist that lie on top of the carpal tunnel to re-establish free-flow of nerve impulses to the hand and fingers. This treatment, used along with the low level laser, has been very encouraging with around 70% of patients experiencing relief (and sleeping much better). A chiropractor will also make ergonomic recommendation as to the proper positioning of your computer, keyboard, mouse, etc.

March is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Awareness Month, which is a great time to receive a free, no obligation consultation with Dr. Eckert to discuss if conservative care is appropriate for you.Located at 412 Cromwell Avenue in Rocky Hill.
